2016 Education Projects

  • AWLS: SCI Flint sent 4 educators to the AWLS program at Jackson Hole this year. In addition to the tuition at AWLS, SCI Flint paid for the teachers’ travel expenses. We also pledged $3,000 for the AWLS maintenance program. SCI Flint paid for 2 additional teachers who could not attend due to fire and referred 3 more to Sables, who sponsored them. Chapter past-president, Matt Bluntzer attended AWLS work weekend helping to get the camp ready before classes started.
  • Sponsorship of Youth Programs: Financial sponsorship of several youth shooting and outdoor education programs including:, $1,300 for the Hahn outdoor fishing club; $500 for the Goodrich HS Shooting Team; $500 for the Grand Blanc HS Shooting Team; $900 for the Reese HS Shooting Team; and $500 for Davison High School Shooting Team.
  • SHAP: SCI sent 3 individuals to this youth hunter education program in 2016.
  • Joseph Schotthoeferr Scholarship: Donation of $1,000 via the Michigan Involvement Committee. The scholarships are granted from the MIC to students involved in conservation curriculum. The Michigan DNR provides a list of possible recipients to the MIC.
  • Outfitters Expo (Virtual Shooting System): SCI Flint provided interactive educational tools for both youth and adults at our 11th Annual Hunting Outfitters Expo in March 2015, open to the public. More than 600 persons attended and participated in these displays.
  • Detroit Outdoor Adventure Center archery range: This facility located in Detroit, MI contains an archery range that was sponsored by 8 Michigan SCI chapters. SCI Flint donated $1,400 for the construction of this center.
  • Swartz Creek Archery in the Schools Program: SCI Flint donated $9,000 for start up costs of the National Archery in the Schools Program at Swartz Creek Schools.
  • Jim George Memorial Scholarship: Donation of $500 to the scholarship winner for education expenses.
  • Hunter Safety Classes: Chapter Education Director, Tim Pifher with the assistance of Chapter President Dennis Gepfrey conducted five hunter safety classes (25 students each) sponsored by SCI Flint and hosted by Williams Gunsite company. Tim was recognized with the MDNR Hunter Education Instructor of the Year – over a 20 year period, he has conducted over 370 classes and training over 4,000
